“We might consider how much humor informs the fate of spiritual teachers. Personal experience and awareness is absolutely essential. A teacher will provide direction but when he or she is so careless as to write instructions students will have the tendency to grasp on to the instructions. The instructions become absolute and are presented as a substitute for immediate experience. This is particularly so after a teacher dies. And it is equally so in most creative endeavors martial arts as well as spiritual teaching. Cling not to the dead instructors. Look to the moment.
