I was born and raised in El Barrio. Like every other family, I was raised by a single mom on welfare barely into my schooling.

I always walked with my head down and was bullied in school and always got angry at myself for this.

I had low self- esteem and as a teen I was always Independent and had to raise myself.

I went to elementary and junior high school in this neighborhood barely passing. Going to high school and graduating was never really a priority for me for I never thought of having a career or doing anything to really better myself. I lacked the drive to be someone in the neighborhood/community. I tried to change this when I had to join this youth group in the 23rd precinct called the NYPD Explorers after having got in trouble. This program taught me a lot but still wasn't enough for me. I would go outside and hang out all day till late night at age 15.

Walking back from school one day I was handed a flier for this new karate school that had opened up a few months before. Out of curiosity (and because I was having a weight issue) I decided to call the number and get some info. I spoke to Sonia and she told me about the program and what they offered and the price. After hearing the price I was saddened for I didn't think I would be able to afford this. She convinced me to come in and try a free class.

After just turning 16 I went in and took my free intro class and fell so in love with the dojo that I had my heart set to signing up and joining no matter what it took. I started working a five dollar off the books an hour job and was able to afford the monthly dues. Every cent was worth it. I got (and still get) so much out of this. I have lost much weight and gained discipline, my self-esteem is sky high, and so much more. I would never have thought I would stick to training and get so far. I would never have thought I would be able to defend myself in physical and mental situations. I have even changed my attitude towards school and life itself.

After a few months of joining I was asked to join staff and thought how privileged it was to be helping with the children's class and being a part of Ultimate Karate USA. Sensei, Instructor, and Sonia saw how hard it was for me and my family financially for they saw my payments coming later and later. They arranged a way for me to continue taking my classes and I am forever grateful for that.

I am now 19 going to 20 and up to this day throughout the years here, seeing kids learning karate and getting so much from their class and seeing how this dojo has changed so many people and seeing the positive energy always amazes me. I love seeing how kids change and grow with us. I think these children are lucky to have many positive influences and parents who care about their schooling and health. Nothing can compare to training, working out, and giving yourself to Martial Arts. As you walk in it’s like you just walked into an open embrace by a big family. The atmosphere and the people here is like no other, and you can see how close Ultimate Karate is to the community and people in it. I will continue to stay here helping, watching and experiencing Ultimate Karate USA grow even more.
